Autism is diagnosed on a spectrum with three levels based on the level of support an individual needs:
- Level 1: Requires support
- Level 2: Requires substantial support
- Level 3: Requires very substantial support
While autism is a lifelong condition, a person’s support needs can change over time, especially with early and consistent intervention like ABA therapy. A child diagnosed with Level 3 autism may improve significantly in communication, behavior, and daily functioning. In some cases, their diagnosis may be re-evaluated to Level 2 or Level 1, depending on their progress.
It’s important to note that this doesn’t mean autism has been “cured”—it means the child’s skills and independence have improved. Progress depends on many factors, including the child’s unique strengths, family support, and access to therapies.
