When two people on the autism spectrum decide to have children, one common question that comes up is: Will our child be autistic too? It’s a fair and understandable concern — but the answer isn’t as simple as yes or no.
Autism does have a genetic component, meaning it can run in families. But it’s not guaranteed.
Two autistic parents can have a child who is not on the spectrum, just as two non-autistic parents can have a child who is. Genetics play a role, but so do other complex factors we don’t fully understand yet.
What Does “Normal” Even Mean?
The word normal gets thrown around a lot, but it’s important to challenge what that really means. Every child—autistic or not—is unique, with their own strengths, challenges, and personality.
Rather than focusing on whether a child will be “normal,” it’s more helpful to think about how you can support their growth and happiness, whatever their needs may be.
Parenting is never one-size-fits-all. What matters most is a supportive, loving environment—and that starts with understanding and acceptance.
