Health First Colorado covers ABA for children under 21 through the federal EPSDT benefit, with no annual dollar cap. Colorado's Medicaid system runs through seven Regional Accountable Entities and which one coordinates your child's care depends on your county. Colorado just raised the bar on ABA oversight
On June 2, 2026, Governor Polis signed HB26-1425, establishing the Applied Behavior Analysis Practice Act. Individual practitioner licensure is required from July 1, 2028. Until then, BACB board certification remains the operative professional standard and every analyst on your child's team holds it.

Does my child need an autism diagnosis to start?
For most insurance plans, yes. Health First Colorado covers behavioral therapy based on medical necessity, which in some cases can include children without a confirmed autism diagnosis, but ABA specifically requires one for most coverage paths. If your child hasn't been evaluated yet, reach out and we'll help you figure out the fastest path to getting started.
How does Health First Colorado cover ABA?
Through the federal EPSDT benefit, Health First Colorado covers medically necessary ABA for children under 21 with no annual dollar cap. Coverage is the same statewide. Your RAE handles authorization and care coordination for your region based on your county.

Will someone really come to my home in Colorado?
Yes. In-home is our primary service, not a fallback. We serve families across the Front Range and beyond.
How long does ABA therapy take?
It depends entirely on your child. What stays consistent is the goal: your child needing less of us over time, not more.
What if my child doesn't connect with the therapist?
Tell us. We'll make a change. A child who doesn't trust their therapist isn't learning from them.
