Yes, a child can show signs of autism and not receive an autism diagnosis. Some behaviors commonly associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), such as delayed speech, limited eye contact, repetitive movements, or sensory sensitivities, can also appear in children with other developmental differences or temporary delays.
For example, speech delays may occur without autism. Anxiety, ADHD, or sensory processing challenges can also overlap with autism-like traits. According to the CDC, a comprehensive developmental evaluation is necessary to determine whether a child meets diagnostic criteria for ASD.
In our work, we’ve seen families feel unsure when early signs appear. Sometimes children benefit from early support and later do not meet criteria for autism. Other times, early intervention leads to clearer understanding and appropriate services.
